I became a Soldier

What strategies do you use to maintain your health and well-being?

It had been my dream to become a soldier from the time that I saw 9/11. Though I was just in middle school at the time, I maintained that willpower and determination to go and serve my country. It seemed that fate had other plans for me. As soon as I turned 18 and tried to join, I was turned away. I tried several more times until I hit 35. I didn’t give up. The army recruitment rates dropped low, and the last opportunity came. I joined the national guard as active duty wouldn’t touch me. I oathed and made my commitment, and waited until a spot for training could be found. When I did go to training, it was hard. I am a 36 year old man, and I weighed 325lbs, I was not exactly in the spring of youth. But I did not give up, I pushed, cursed, complained, and I hated myself and my choice. I must’ve been mad. I lost part of my finger, and yet I pushed through. I became something of a favorite among the higher leadership because I did not give up.

Now that I am back, I maintain some of the training I received, and my weight continues to decrease. I continue to push myself to limits. I want to see what else I can do.
