In my recent streak of being back at work, I have vast amounts of time to contemplate many things. I have listened to many books of science fiction and listened to a podcast or two and watch a YouTube on how wormholes are theorized to work. And in all that time I have to say that with my amateur efforts of study and piecing what humans know of the abstract and theories to be total baloney.
Humans can only test theories that they may know and test near home or within the gravity of Earth or Sol. That being said their theories on how they believe the universe may work could very well all be wrong. Gravity and the general movement of the universe need to be considered. That is my first point, gravity causes the whole of the galaxy to maintain a rotation around the galactic center. The rotation is predictable and yet chaotic. Meaning that the fixed point is stable and the stars, planets, and celestial bodies are moving. It is akin to a boat adrift in the sea. One day, the boat be next to a piling, the next day it might be in the middle of the ocean, and the next day it could be on the bottom. The point being is that space is more in motion than the ocean and it is difficult to predict when a wormhole, natural or artificial, will be seen.
Imagine it like this, two points on a graph are easy to see if they are marked correctly, say points (2,2) and (-3,-3) with x and y coordinates close enough that they can wave to each other. But to get those coordinates to gain a short cut and for the paper to be folded upon each other requires that there be several other dimensions to be considered. The and then one has to rely that the points stay in the same place. The points may stay in the same place but the heavenly items may move upon exiting the wormhole. Since our universe is one of chaotic movement the wormholes may exist but they’re entrances and exits will always seem like they are moving, when in reality it is the heavenly items that are maintaining their movement and never in the same place. So if you enter a wormhole that is at 1 o’clock there is a chance that you may still end up at the same area as entering just at a different point.
This all has to do with time, as I am undoubtedly you are aware. Time does not stop simply because you left space. Time marches on and does not simply halt while you transition from one point to the next. The stars will keep moving, the planets will keep orbiting, the moons will wane and wax. Time moves forward. So time traveling is and will always be impossible unless it is in the same direction that we all go.
Maybe not as many points as I thought I had, but still. Wormholes, natural or artificial, are just not possible or at least are not as convenient as Science Fiction makes them out to be.
For a fun moment in sci-fi
