KYLLR App

Henry Cotrick

Who knew that getting to the movie theater would have been such a dangerous proposal? Up and down twisting roads, he swore that he missed a turn but the race was on. This was a big hit for such a small town and Henry had to be sure that his marked bullet was the first one to be found in the autopsy. Marked bullets were amazing tools for hits. They were automatic get out of conviction cards, as long as his Mark was the one to cause the death, he could count that he would only serve a few hours of jail time or none if he could get away.

Contract killing became a big thing some years ago. Anyone could do it if anyone could do it. Licenses were given and as long as your mark was the killing blow then you were guaranteed not to have jail time. It was included in the contract price. Targets were expensive but if they were determined to be rid of, then the payment would be made. Even if Henry didn’t make the kill, jail time would be a maximum of ninety days for public endangerment.

But all of that was moot if he couldn’t get to the movie theater first. If he wasn’t even in the running for the kill then he couldn’t even worry about moving faster on foot to get there first. As soon as the contract was listed, Henry swore that he saw three other faces lift up. Ten thousand might seem a bit light for a kill and Henry thought that he would be the only one going. He was wrong. Three cars bolted out of the parking lot and onto the road. The first to kill would be awarded the meager fee. The road was not easy to follow. The GPS seemed determined to take the most troublesome road not the most direct.

After ten minutes of harrowing roads, Henry finally arrived at the prominent mall with the movie theater at the direct center surrounded by foot paths and stores. The evening lights lit up the store fronts and the few hundred people that milled around between him and his payday.

Henry’s app alarmed with delight as the name and photo of the target came into play. Ronnie Miller. He looked like a teenage geek complete with thick frame glasses and acne all over his face. His singular defining feature was a scar on his upper lip on his left side. Movie theater 10 seat J10. Players on the field: 5. May the first kill be the only one.

The app seemed to be a bit cheeky but with four other killers nearby Henry didn’t have time to wonder about that. He had to move quickly and be inconspicuous. He only had five marked bullets and he needed to be sure that his was the kill shot. No headshot. Those could blow up the face and make the bounty null and void. Too many rookies have been convicted of murder because of that sort of stupid mistake. A shot to the heart was the easiest way to gain a perfect kill.

Malls were inherently filled to the brim with women. Every store caters to the needs of women thus the mall was filled with women and the only males seemed to be pushing their way to the movie theater. Tired of the drudgery of shopping and the tediousness of it all, men go to the movie theater to turn off and relax. For this theater was also a beer garden and sports bar complete with Lazy-boy recliners. The perfect getaway from the psychopathic wives and girlfriends.

Henry moved slowly and methodically through the crowd and into the movie theater grounds. He noticed three others moving in with him to go straight to the theater itself. Those must have been the other killers because the next show was starting in ten minutes. By the time I noticed the other killers, the other men in the surrounding area noticed the show was about to start. Henry moved with all his agility to make sure that he got a seat.

As he was standing in line, his phone chirped again. Players on the field: 4.

Well that’s not good. He thought to himself. If there were fewer players than that means someone got arrested, escorted off property, or killed. None of the options were good for a KYLLR such as himself. It meant that the authorities would be aware of him soon and more guarded, meaning he may face jail time if caught in a place such as this, even if he hasn’t done anything. If he was caught with the KYLLR app, he could be charged with any number of unsolved gunshot murders. He had to make sure that he killed Mr. Miller and make his obligation for being here plausible.

Tickets for the show were twenty bucks. Henry hurried and forked over the money to the teller. He had to get in and find Mr. Miller before any of the others did.

“Duck! Rabbit! Duck!” The classic looney tune short was playing as a pre-show classic warm-up. Henry made his way through the dimly lit theater and found the J row. He was nearly there. He saw that there were two others already there waiting for the supposed victim. Mr. Miller must have had to use the bathroom. Henry locked eyes with one of the two others and both seemed to have the same idea and bolted away from the seat and back out the door towards the bathroom. Henry stopped the silly pursuit and chose to sit at his seat, J11.

About halfway through the cartoon and man with the biggest bucket of popcorn sat down next to him on J10. The man’s face was obscured by the mountain of popcorn. Henry felt his hopes rise just a bit. As Daffy Duck got his bill blown off once again by Elmer Fudd, J10 jumped up a bit as if something had bit him and he spilled the popcorn all over the floor. Henry saw clearly that Ronnie Miller’s geekness was in full view. As if a light bulb clicked on, Henry jumped up from his own seat, pulled his pistol and pushed the barrel to Ronnie’s heart and pushed him back down in the seat and pulled the trigger when he felt the push back. The single shot was muzzled and silent thanks to Ronnie. The man fell over and slumped forward into the popcorn.

Henry thought that he felt Ronnie’s lifeless body jerk two or three more times as more bullets hit him. But they were too late, Henry made the killing shot. Now, he must escape and leave the area before the authorities can catch up to him.
