Cleaner – Pillar of the Community

Moria Gladstone, or Ms. Gladys, was a pillar of her community. She had the heart of an angel some would say, others said that there was none like her. Her house was always full of tenets, ten at least. There was never any need or want in her house. Food overflowed from her doors and the neighborhood benefited from the abundance.
Free hamburgers on Wednesday.
She grew her own vegetables and processed her own meat in the barn behind her house. Men, women and children, doctors, lawyers and police, everyone in town knew that Miss Gladys had a giving heart. Few people could contend with her wealth as she was seen at many rallies as a contributor. Local politicians and leaders knew her as a pillar of the community. The towns in the area knew her and her free picnics on Wednesday.
But her tenets saw her only as Moria. For she had only six permanent tenets. These were ones that had family that visited them on a regular basis. Moria couldn’t help them to move on, so they stayed and lived in a sort of perpetual fear of Moria. They kept to themselves and their fear of her kept them in check. These tenets had nowhere left to go and many of them were too old to really go anywhere else. Their families that checked on them so often was the only thing that was keeping them alive, but of course they could not tell their family, out of fear of Ms. Gladys.
One day a social worker, Rachael, brought a man, Mr. Temper, to Ms. Gladys. This man had slight bouts of schizophrenia, sometimes he just forgot who he was or where he was. He had no family and no one who would come calling except his social worker. Rachael had asked around for a boarding house that would provide and care for Mr. Temper. Ms. Gladys was mentioned to be the best, and lucky for Rachael an opening had just become available. Mr. Temper had moved into the bordering house with nothing but the clothes on his back.
Rachael visited Mr. Temper at least four times a week until she was sure that he was well taken care of. She limited her visits to four times a month. and then at the fourth month tragedy had struck her as her mother had died of a stroke and she fell into a slight depression and neglected her work. It wasn’t until three months after her mother died that she thought of trying to visit with Mr. Temper. When she arrived at Ms. Gladys house to see Mr. Temper, she spoke only with Ms. Gladys. Lucky for Rachael, went on Wednesday for the community picnic.
Upon speaking with Ms. Gladys, Rachael found out that Mr. Temper had been picked up by his family and they had left the country. Rachael thought this statement odd being that she didn’t know that Mr. Temper had any family. Ms. Gladys was insistent that Mr. Temper had left and was not coming back, she said this with her sweetest smile as she served Rachael another burger with all the fixings.
After the picnic, Rachael went to the police station to report that Mr. Temper was missing. When she said that he was last seen living at Ms. Gladys boarding house, most of the police officers all patted their stomachs as they had all just gotten done eating at Ms. Gladys house. The only one that did not pay their stomach was the detective that was listening to the concern in Rachael’s report. Detective Short was newly arrived from Austin and had not the time to get to know the community yet, so he had no idea who Ms. Gladys was.
Short followed up that evening with the missing person report. Short visited with Ms. Gladys inside her house. He was stopped at her front porch and denied access. The old lady knew her rights and the policeman was stopped from exploring her house without a cause. Short knew that he would have to get a judge’s permission to explore the property. Ms. Gladys may have denied Detective Short permission to enter, but she was not without kindness and she gave Short a hamburger with all the fixins’ wrapped in a paper towel.
“Don’t be shy dearie.” She said in her sweet granny voice. “Have a burger on the house.”
Short thanked her and left the premises. When he got back to his car. Short took a bite of the burger and noticed that the taste was sweet and the textured superbly tender. He put the car in drive and left the area as he made his way back to the station, eating the burger as he went. It was like every bite was beckoning for the next. He ate half the burger before he noticed something truly revolting, half of a thumbnail split vertically came out of his mouth with the lastest bite. He felt his head spin and his stomach dropped to the bottom of the floor of the car. He pulled over to the side of the road and proceeded to vomit on the side of the road. Short may have just achieved his probable cause for an exploratory search of her property.
When Short returned back to the police station he immediately went to the CSI lab and asked that the lab tech on duty do a DNA test on the fingernail and the rest of the burger and to focus mainly on the pink part most of all. The test came back positive for human DNA for both the fingernail and the meat of the burger. After the lab tech finished evacuating his stomach, he gave his report to Short and Short took their combined report to Judge Mathis for a 48 hour hold on Ms. Gladys. and exploratory investigation of her property.
Whenever the officers arrived on her property, they all were greeted by Ms. Gladys and a tray of hamburgers. All of the officers felt a wave of revulsion remembering what those things truly were.
“Don’t be shy Dearies. Have a burger on the house.”

Moria Gladstone was arrested and sentenced to life in prison after the bones of 43 men and women were found buried all over her property. None of the bodies had any meat left on the bones.
