The Arising Gale – 4

November 21, 2080

Happy Birthday.

It was finally that time of year. It was time for my birthday. Ten years ago today, They were made. This was the day, the best day of the year. This was their day. It is an important day.

Kate and Kyle were both born on this day. As summer and fall had come and gone and Thanksgiving was on the rise, the new coming of age was upon them, though they didn’t know it.

They were both neighbors and had many of the same friends. Many of their schoolmates were the invited party guests. Though the two had not been friends at the beginning of the year, some certain visitors in summer allowed the two to become fast friends. Kate had been on a family vacation when she had seen a new forest rise above a mountain. Kyle had been a shut-in when on a venture outside he had met an older boy that had shown him the top of the world. Kyle had seen Kate’s initials at the top of the tree and decided that he should befriend her quickly.

As soon as she returned, Kyle endeavored to become her friend. He said that he wanted to know more about the places that she had been and to see the wild world that she knew. She agreed. Though Kyle was slow to follow at first, his endurance and fearlessness quickly improved. By the end of the summer, the two were climbing skyscrapers and staying out all day. Nights were spent learning about the vast sky and the creatures that lived in the night. There were many creatures that occupied their attention. They knew each other as well as themselves and they challenged each other daily with new dangers.

The party started at noon and went on until four in the afternoon. There were games and prizes, presents and cakes, and celebrations all the time. There were no video games much to the disappointment and chagrin of the guests. For many of the guests barely knew the outside world and it was without this realm that Kyle and Kate excelled.

At about half past three, when the party was winding down, an odd trio approached the birthday pair with two equally sized boxes. They were three teenagers, one boy and two girls. The girls bore the boxes while the boy led them. All three were beautifully handsome, the envy of many models and athletes. For these were the children of Dragos and this was their first presentation.

“Might we have your attention!” The boy’s voice was heard to be a deafening shout that silenced all of the crowd’s conversations, attention was gained.

“We three have a very special gift for these two. For it is their birthday, this is their day. This is a day that all humans should rejoice in. This shall be the day that begins the new year. These two shall receive Gaia’s gift. Humans are being given a gift of life or power. Both are determined by the deeds of childhood. These two, through their past actions, have proved themselves for the shorter but greater power. At sundown, they shall be endowed with the power to reshape the Earth according to their will. All humans after sundown today will begin to have either life or power at the end of their tenth birthday.”

Mary and Eve placed the gifts into the arms of Kyle and Kate. The two quickly unwrapped and held them up for the gathered crowd to see. The crowd was not only people now, but many robots with cameras were now watching and broadcasting to all sorts of media outlets across the planet.

“These are gifts that our father has blessed you with. These weapons will help you to harness and focus your energy until you understand that you can harness the energy of the planet itself and remake it how you wish.”

Before the three could get swarmed with questions from parents, they flew off as a huge dragon plucked them off the earth like a cherry from a tree. They had left a pair of flabbergasted ten year olds stunned on the ground.

After a while and after a small period of relief. The sun began to set and the pair noticed it. They raced with their new gifts strapped to their backs like they had been there all the time. They race to the tree in the park. The very tree where Kyle had seen Kate’s initials carved into the wood. They climbed to the top and watched the sunset on their day, at the beginning of the new year. They wanted to see if there would be magic.

They reached the top and the sun crossed the horizon. In the dark that quickly followed, they did not really feel a change. Kyle could sort of see a glow coming from behind himself. He figured that it was the glow of the night lights of the city behind him, but nay. It was the gifts that they had. They glowed while strapped to their backs. Kyle reached for the handle and drew forth the weapon. The tool looked to be a sword and he could feel the power of the earth flow through him and into the sword. He felt the flow and he felt that his eyes were opened once again. Akin to a newborn seeing the world for the first time. Though he new what the world had looked like, this was the first time that he could see the lay lines and feel the pulse of the whole world. The people all around moved with the pulse and did not fight it.

Kyle and Kate looked everywhere before eventually settling onto the eyes of each other. They saw a slight glow in each other’s eyes, they were scared and back away from each other. Forgetting that they were on a high tree, they fell and almost hit the ground. But it was not an omnipresent robot that caught them, it was their own will to live. They were floating five feet above the dirt of where the tree stood. They had caught themselves and they floated there staying in the air.

Kate had caught on quicker than Kyle and had begun to fly hither and thither. She flew to the top of the tree and then bounded to the top of the nearest building.

Kyle was slower on the uptake, and yet his power sent him upward higher than a floating cloud. Up the two shot higher and higher. The air got thin then the two feeling weary, descended and the ground that they approached was different from that which they left. The night was young and so were they. Lost they were the first of a new generation of what was to come.
