The Arising Gale – 1

Introduction

Hello and welcome to the next Episode of the Mythos of Ed. It will pick up a few years later and follow three new characters. These will be the magic-imbued humans. Each will meet one of the children of Ed and each will be shown to influence the original children and be a determining factor for the stories that come next. Rocks and Winds take place within this same story. But all of my stories remain within The In Constant Chronicles.

March 2080

Kate had explored Portland. All of it. At nine years old, nearly ten, she had seen everything that was within her reach. Towering skyscrapers to the vast automatic underbelly. All of her whims were catered to and she was never in any true danger. Such was life in the city.

Though she had been born in this age of technology she often yearned to see beyond the rocky veil of the eastern mountains. Her parents had taken her to go skiing up in Wyoming. She had gotten lost for two days. When she was found she had a smile as big as the fluffy golden sheep she had been with. Kate had no fear. The days that she had spent alone were ones that she felt safest in. Exploring new lands and seeing the forests from the peaks of the mountain tops.

Though she was never truly alone in this endeavor. She was guided by one that saw to her actual needs. Of food and warmth she was not without. For she met on way back to the lodge a girl that was lightly clad with green clothes. She appeared to be the incarnation of spring itself. She had been among the trees and performing that which Kate had only heard of. Magic.

The green dressed girl saw Kate and smiled as she showed her the tree she had been working with. She beckoned Kate to come closer. Though Kate had no fear, she was appropriately cautious. She took only a few steps at first. However, after seeing the seemingly dead tree begin to sprout new leaves, she threw caution in to the gentle mountain breeze. For she saw the miracle that was known as magic, forcing the natural world to bend to her will.

“Do you like what you see, child?” The green lady asked.

The stem that came out produced two green leaves and a small pink flower. As they sprang out light seemed to emerge from them and out with a small pop.

“They are very pretty.” Kate said. “How are you doing that?”

“With the simplest of ease. This is a simple trick that most with an imagination can conjure. Would you like to try?”

Kate nodded her head and walked up to the branch.

“Place both of your hands around the base of the branch and imagine that life is being beckoned out of it. Like water from a spring.”

Kate closed her eyes and imagined that the pink flower that she had seen earlier had the strength and beauty of a mighty tree. That the entire mountain might see the beauty of an ice capped flower. She felt something as she prayed for her wish. Two hands that cupped around hers.

When she opened her eyes, she saw the green clad lady in front of her. Both were smiling as they both saw the wonder of a new plant before their eyes. The magic of Kate had transformed the plant into something other worldly and yet, not exotic.

The green lady led Kate up to the mountain top to see the world below. Neither felt ill or tired as they continued to climb. No food or rest was needed since their magical endeavor. For it seemed that the image of the magical plant made all the air of the mountain no so thin. The temperature was rather warm and the snow jackets that they wore seemed to be getting hot.

When they did reach the top, Kate saw it all. She saw the cities and urban areas to the west. She saw all that people had accomplished. She also couldn’t help but notice the rescue craft on its way up the mountain coming towards her.

To the east is where her attention stayed. The green lady directed her focus far to the east. Beyond deserts and grasslands, beyond lakes and ponds, to the far eastern seas. That is where her focus took her. Like the mighty wind that started to come back to the mountain, we could see beyond normal sight and see the curvature of the earth itself.

“Kate.” The green lady began to speak again. “I know that you are more capable than I could ever hope to be. For you are a child of the true kingdom. I am just a copy of what was to be. You have more potential than you realize. I hope that when my mother comes to visit you, you will choose to recreate the world rather than live through it.”

As Kate looked into the green lady’s face once more, she saw her disappear right before her eyes. She felt her warmth leave her hands and the rescue had come and picked her up and retreated back down the mountainside back to Kate’s parents.

She would never forget all that had been done for the journey was memorable and she dreamed of it often.
