A Star’s Blessing

A Star’s Blessing

By Zachary Furr

Here I lie,

Upon a hill,

With my sheep,

And my dog,

And darkness descends,

Upon me,

Tonight.

(I just made a haiku without meaning to.)

And as I lie,

I see the light,

It’s a solitary light,

That shines with power,

That outshines the sun,

I feel its rays,

And it feels that they bless me,

I feel as if I understand all languages,

I feel as if I understand all emotion,

I feel as if I understand all math,

I feel as if I understand all men,

I feel as if I understand all animals,

I feel as if I understand all life.

Its rays feel as if they penetrate me to my soul,

I feel the star’s light bless me for just looking at it,

And with these blessings,

I know not what to do,

I look to my sheep,

They lay sleep without care,

I look to my dog,

He looks at me,

And says,

Don’t look to me for answers.

That’s when I wake up.

And I see the night sky again,

No star overpowering the others,

But all shining brightly together,

And I see everything,

Far and beyond the horizons,

The sounds of the sleeping animals nearby,

The dog sleeping soundly next to me,

And here I lie,

On this hill,

And I can see,

Morning ascending.

And as I get up to stretch,

I hear from my side,

Good morning,

I look down mid stretch,

only to see my dog there,

Looking as happy as ever.
